Walks
Please come prepared for possibly severe weather
Sunday: Annaloughan National Loop walk.
Ordinary Walk 2-3 hours, very interesting with not too much climbing. Terrain: mostly tracks and trails. However, may be quite wet underfoot in places. This walk was very much appreciated when we did it before in 2013. This walk
Monday: on lower slopes of Slieve Foye.
Ordinary Walk. Length and time variable. 3 5 hours. There are several shortcuts back to Carlingford village, so the length may be varied to suit different tastes, and it starts directly from the hotel and would not require transport.Boots, gaiters and sticks recommended
Monday: Slieve Donard in the Mourne Mountains
Challenging Walk ascending the highest summit in Ulster - 853 metres. Duration: 4.5 to 5.0 hours long Distance: about 9.5 km. with quite a steep climb. Tough but definitely doable for a lot of us if the weather holds up. Stunning views and one of the most admired and appreciated walks in the country. Because of the distance to the start, we will have to leave the hotel very early.
At present we expect to leave the hotel at the latest at 9 am, but this may have to be advanced, so please check
Tuesday: Omeath-Carlingford Greenway
Ordinary walk 2 hours approx. Trail shoes or even trainers should suffice. This is a stunning coastal walk on a good surface.

Walks (to be confirmed)
1. Friday –6 to 8 kms: Coastal cliff walk from Bray to Greystones, 2 hrs approx. pretty flat, very beautiful. Footwear advice: as this walk will be on paths and road, you can wear whatever is most comfortable, light boots, trail shoes or even trainers.
2. Saturday Ordinary Walk – 3 - 31/2 hrs. approx. in the Vale of Clara. This is considered by many to be the most beautiful woodland/riverside walk in the country. Footwear advice: as this walk will be on paths and road and is relatively flat, you can wear whatever is most comfortable, light boots, trail shoes or even trainers.
3. Saturday Challenging Walk – Kanturk and Scarr. This is a long walk, 17 kms approx., but does not involve nearly as much climbing as Lugnaquilla, our original suggestion, which has been dropped due to the considerable driving complications and long drive on very difficult narrow and twisty roads. Boots, gaiters and sticks recommended.
4. Sunday – Wicklow Head coastal walk, 2 hrs approx. Weather dependant.
For more information about walks, please contact Jim Newman 087 6452857
Viewranger Course
For any members who are interested, there will be a 90 minute joint beginners and intermediates training session for using the Viewranger app on your smart phone. This will be held at 7.30 pm sharp on Wednesday 8th. February 2017 at the Southern Hotel, Strandhill Road. Numbers are limited to 20 so you need to book your place by texting Stephen Clarke on 086 1934135. If there are too many we will hold another session about a month or two later. The Viewranger app is like a Satnav designed for walkers and cyclists and with preparation it can be used to indicate where you are and the route you might take, even when you are off-line and out of Wifi range. Please note it is not a substitute for basic compass and map navigational skills, but can be a useful addition and can also be very handy in towns and cities when you are on holiday. The Viewranger app is free and you should download it onto your android or i-phone in preparation for this introductory session, and ignore any invitation to start up a map (tile) purchasing account with the app as this is not necessary. Do play around with and try out the app by yourself as you will always learn more if you have questions or have got stuck at some point. Don't come to the training without your phone charged as this is hands-on interactive training from me and 3 or 4 others who are already familiar with Viewranger. Intermediates will be expected to share the tricks we've learned recently of putting maps and routes on Whats App and sharing route files, downloading maps and more. Stephen

Stay in touch with new Sligo Walking Club WhatsApp chat group
There is now a Sligo Walking Club WhatsApp chat group up and running for any member who would like to be part of it, so if you would like to join it just text your name and mobile number to Stephen Clarke on 086 1934135 and he will join you up. He's the "group administrator" for the first 6 months, which only involves putting people on to the group (he's not responsible for the content of it, and every contributor needs to be considerate and responsible for their messages which everyone in the group can see) and this role should be rotated every 6 months. Unlike Facebook, only people in the group should be able to see contributions, but you still need to be as responsible and sensible as with Facebook or any other open communication system. The Sligo Walking Club website on the internet remains the main gold standard site for representing the club, showing the calendars, all important info and everything, whereas the WhatsApp chat group is just for putting up chat, maybe some pics, temporary and instant little communications etc, and might be used as much or as little as members wish to. You need to have a smart phone and download the free WhatsApp application to avail of this facility.

Report from Everest
Cian O'Brolchain who successfully summited Mt. Everest on May 25th, 2012 will be in Sligo to tell his story on Tuesday Dec 10th in The Glasshouse at 7:30pm. There is no cover charge and all are welcome to come and listen to his fascinating tale.
Pat Falvey and Pemba Gyalje Sherpa have co-written the book 'The Summit' (and there is a film of the same name) to try to find answers as to what really happened in August 2008 when 11 climbers died (including Irishman Ger Mc Donnell) after summitting K2. Pemba was Ger's climbing partner and helped in the rescue attempts to get the stranded climbers to safety. He was subsequently honoured with the National Geographic Adventure Heroism award for 2008.The film - which features extensive interviews with climbers involved as well as Pemba himself is currently showing in the Gaeity Cinema in Sligo. This will be a unique chance to hear firsthand the story of what happened on the mountain by surviving climber Pemba Sherpa. The book signing and lecture will take place on Thurs Dec 5th in Call of the Wild, Castle St, Sligo at 7.30pm. It is a FREE event. All are welcome. There will be an interview feature with Pat in next weeks Sligo Champion and on Wednesday, Niall Delaney will interview him on his morning show.

Autumn Away Trip.
Our Autumn Away Trip based in Westport, Co. Mayo took place from Friday, 11th. October to Sunday 13th. October 2013. All the feed back suggests that this was one of the best ever: great weather, great walks, very good food and accommodation and, of course, the best of company! Well done to Mary Jordan. A special word of thanks to Gerry Tighe, Jerome Coleman and Des Moore, our friends from the Foxford Walking Club, who helped us so kindly and professionally with our Friday walk near Pontoon.
